Phnom Penh became Cambodia’s capital in 1372 after a divine message from the gods. One day an old nun, known only as Lady Penh, was collecting water and firewood along the Tonle Sap river. A Koki tree with a hole in it floated by. She fished the tree out of the river and discovered four gold Buddha statues and one stone statue of the god Vishnu. A shrine was built on top of a hill and became known as Wat Phnom. This is the story of how Phnom Penh was founded. Phnom Penh Travel Guide Phnom Penh is the capital of Cambodia but it wasn’t always. Up until the 14th century the capital was Angkor. The newly established city quickly developed into Cambodia’s cultural, economic, and industrial epicenter. Once known as Krong Chaktomuk, Phnom Penh is now a top tourist destination in Southeast Asia. Located at the intersection of three separate rivers, Phnom Penh has heaps of natural resources. The Tonle Sap, Mekong and Bassac Rivers all flow through or around Phnom Penh. The rivers provide fresh water, food, transportation and trade routes. However, during rainy seasons the area is prone to flooding.

Killing Fields of Choeung Ek
A former concentration camp, Choeung Ek is now a memorial to the thousands of lives exterminated during the Khmer Regime. For three years, from 1975 to 1978 over 17,000 men, women and children were tortured and killed at the demands of Pol Pot. Pol Pot rose to power in the Khmer People’s Revolutionary Party (KPRP).In 1968 the group started a national uprising which led to the massive slaughter of Cambodians, now known as the Cambodian Genocide. Today, the former killing fields are now a museum, a monument, and a reminder. In the center of the compound is a seventeen-story glass monument that has over 8,000 skulls uncovered from the fields. Open daily, there are audio tours that tell the gruesome story of the killing fields. This is a must-visit while in Phnom Penh.

Once you step outside of Phnom Penh International Airport, you will probably be a bit overwhelmed. You will see different types of vehicles whizzing by, heavy traffic everywhere, and seemingly no traffic laws, but don’t worry, you can easily get around. Easily, not quickly. Remember, Phnom Penh is like any other metropolis around the world. Scams and crime exist so be careful. Don’t wave your valuables around, leave your wallet in your FRONT pocket until you need to use it, and always be aware of your surroundings.
