Cambodia is a small country located in Southeast Asia. Cambodia is bordered by Thailand, Laos, Vietnam and The Gulf of Thailand. The coastline is over 430 km long, much of which is undisturbed mangroves.

Nearly 10% of Cambodia’s 15 million people live in the capital, Phnom Penh. Over 90% of the country practices Theravada Buddhism, whose teachings come from the “Doctrine of the Elders”. The remaining 10% practice Christianity or Islam.

Even though Cambodia is relatively flat, the country is home to a few mountain ranges. The most well-known are the Elephant, the Cardamon, and the Dangrek Mountains.

Cambodia is also home to the mighty Mekong River as well as Southeast Asia’s largest freshwater lake, the Tonle Sap.

The Kingdom of Wonder is the perfect name for Cambodia despite its sordid and bloody past. The horrible story of Pol Pot and the Khmer Rouge is of great value to travelers and the world.

Now, Cambodia’s tourism industry has been steadily growing with over 5 million foreign visitors each year. This growth is helping Cambodia improve and turn itself into a popular travel destination.

Angkor Wat

Angkor Wat is the largest religious monument in the world and also attracts the largest number of travelers to Cambodia. The temple of Angkor Wat, located in the Angkor Complex was originally built to honor the Hindu god, Vishnu. Angkor Wat ended up becoming a Buddhist temple towards the end of the 12th century. Angkor Wat is the most recognized temple in Cambodia and has become a symbol for the country. It’s even on the national flag! The temple walls of Angkor Wat are actually pieces of art. Scenes depicting intricate stories from Hindu and Buddhist sagas were carved into the walls.

Tuol Sleng Genocide Museum (S-21)

Also known as The Killing Fields, this was once one of the many mass graves used by the Khmer Rouge. They executed over one million people during the regime between 1975 and 1979. The glass monument here has over 5,000 human skulls, bones, and murder weapons on display. Tuol Sleng tells the story of the Cambodian genocide. At one time Tuol Sleng was a high school yet it was transformed into a torture and interrogation center housing prisoners of the Khmer Rouge. Millions of people were slaughtered under the Khmer Rouge, their slogan being, “To spare you is no profit, to destroy you is no loss.” That quote just goes to show you how cruel and callous the regime was. Pol Pot, a ruthless dictator, ordered the killing of lawyers, doctors, scientists, teachers, and monks. He ordered the killings of pretty much anyone he deemed educated. Entire families were forced from their homes and onto farms, working long, brutal hours with little or no food. During this terrible moment in history, one-fifth of Cambodia’s population was lost. To honor and remember all the lives lost, Tuol Sleng transformed yet again. This time, into a museum to remind the world of what happened. This is a must visit while traveling through Cambodia.

Koh Rong

Koh Rong is the largest of Cambodia’s islands and the most visited. There is a big nightlife scene if you are looking for a party. There are also coral reefs, white sand beaches, and hills covered in forest to explore during the day.

Botum Sakor National Park

Botum Sakor is Cambodia’s largest national park and is located near the Gulf of Thailand. Botum Sokor is covered with evergreen forests, grasslands, mangroves and swamp forests. This park contains a ton of diverse flora and fauna. Actually, most of the land in Botum Sokor National Park is still unstudied and undocumented! Take a trip here to possibly see 44 rare animal species such as Sunda pangolin, Bengal slow loris, Indochinese lutung, hog deer, dhole, fishing cat, Asian elephant, large-toothed ferret badger, hairy-nosed and the smooth-coated otter, sambar deer, large-spotted civet, pileated gibbon and the Indochinese tiger. There have also been some undocumented sightings of the Sun and Moon bear. Botum Sokor is also home to plenty of unique amphibians like the Mortensen’s frog and the spine-glanded mountain frog. Snakes like the king cobra and the Malay pit viper are very common to the park. So, tread carefully and maybe you’ll make it out alive with a newly discovered species!

The Tonle Sap

The Tonle Sap is the largest freshwater lake located in Southeast Asia. This unique lake reverses its flow with the dry and rainy seasons. Cambodian locals, unafraid of the water, have built floating villages to accommodate the lakes changing tides. The Tonle Sap has one of the most diverse ecosystems in the world and is home to quite a few endangered species. Plenty of unique creatures like the spot-billed pelican, the Bengal florican, grey-headed fish eagle, and the Manchurian reed-warbler have made the Tonle Sap their home. The UNESCO biosphere calls the lake an ecological hotspot.

Phnom Penh

Located on the banks of the Mekong, Tonle Sap, and the Bassac rivers is “The Pearl of Asia”, aka Phnom Penh. Phnom Penh is now the capital city of Cambodia. As legend has it, Phnom Penh became a Cambodian city after a woman made a spiritual discovery in the area. She found a tree floating in a river near Phnom Penh. Inside of the tree, she found four Buddha statues and one Vishnu statue. The woman believed this to be a sign and built her house on a nearby hill. This led to the creation of Phnom Penh.

Siem Reap

Siem Reap is a major touristic city because of the majestic Angkor Temple Complex. That’s not all that you’ll find in this cozy, little city. There are plenty of places to discover in and outside of town. To cater to the large amounts of tourists that pass through Siem Reap every year are plenty restaurants, hotels, resorts, and bars. Don’t let the busy and bustling city center fool you. A short tuk-tuk ride in any direction will take you into Cambodia’s beautiful countryside. Get outside and explore lotus farms, small villages, and rice paddies.

Kampot & Kep

Kampot is a quiet town, home to Cambodia’s famous black pepper farms. Kampot also has an elaborate cave system surrounding itself that you can go explore. I don’t want to say too much but, you may still find temples inside! Southwest of Kampot, only 30 minutes away, you’ll discover a picturesque fishing village called Kep. Kep is where you’ll taste the freshest seafood that you’ve had in your life. The area is also well-known for having the best soft-shell and hard-shell crabs in Cambodia. Everything is fished daily, right out of the ocean. If you wanted to, you could follow the fishermen on their quest. Take some of the bounty that you all gathered at the end and eat on the beach. You’ll be hard pressed to find fresher seafood than the local restaurants in Kep.

Ochheuteal & Serendipity Beaches

Ochheuteal and Serendipity Beaches are some of the busiest areas of Sihanoukville. They are modern beaches with plenty of character. Maybe you’ll see some Khmer kids playing in the water or maybe you’ll see a fire show. You never know!

Otres Beach

Otres beach used to be a deserted paradise. With few travelers, gorgeous beaches, and plenty of sun this area was once a hidden gem. Now, it has transformed into something like Ochheuteal beach with shops and cafes popping up everywhere.

Sokha is the cleanest and best-looking beach in Sihanoukville but, … Yes, there is bad news. Well, maybe not if you booked your stay at Sokha Beach Resort! Most of Sokha beach is owned by Sokha Beach Resort. If you aren’t a guest you may be chased away by security guards.

The Mondulkiri Project is an NGO started by Mr. Tree. He made an agreement with tribe leaders to control a large area of forest near Sen Monorom. Mr. Tree turned this area into an elephant sanctuary. Here, you can walk and trek through Cambodia’s thick jungle with a pretty big companion. The elephants at the Mondulkiri Project are bought from places that use them for hard labor and rides for tourists.

Inscriptions found at the temple tell us that Koh Ker was once the capital of the ancient Khmer Empire from 928-944 AD. Apparently, there were over 10,000 people living there!

Bokor Hill Station

Built in the 1920’s by French colonists, the Bokor Hill Station has since been abandoned. Bokor Hill Station had plans to become a small town and a luxury resort on top of Bokor Mountain. However, due to the sites remote location, 900 people died during the construction. You will still be able to find a small temple at the top.

Do you check the weather before you travel?

I hope so, especially if you’re headed to Southeast Asia. Most countries here, including Cambodia, have only two seasons: Dry and Wet

There is the dry season from October to April. And rainy season from May to September. Just so you know, both of these seasons are hot! The temperature does cool off a bit between November and February. Coincidentally, November also marks the beginning of high season.

High season is when the majority of tourists start making their way to the Kingdom of Wonder. Expect everything to be busy!

If you don’t want to be overwhelmed by fellow travelers, I recommend traveling during the rainy season.

Cambodia’s rainy season is also known as the low season. This is when there are the least amount of tourists coming into the country. Many places lower their prices to attract the few travelers actually here. Traveling during the rainy season can be a great experience but, you need to prepare for possible heavy rains. Personally, I love traveling during this time as all of the vegetation is lush and green. Popular places are empty and much better to enjoy. And it can be a fun experience huddling up next to locals trying to get out of the rain.

Cambodia is quickly becoming a major travel destination in Southeast Asia.

Why?

Simply because Cambodia offers something for everyone. You can get lost in Phnom Penh and Sihanoukville. Or trek out into the wild jungles. Maybe you just want to sip on a cocktail at Otres beach. Or go on an adventure through ancient Khmer ruins. Some people come to discover rare animal species. While others prefer to discover the culture and traditions of the Khmer people. No matter what you want to get out of your vacation; you can find it in the Kingdom of Wonder.
