Angkor Wat

One of the main reasons why people travel to Siem Reap is to visit the Angkor Temple Complex. You can wander around the temples alone but what would be the good of that. Find a tour company and hire a guide. He will show you some hidden spots and teach you about the ancient archaeological sites history. Angkor Wat is the main temple within the Angkor Temple Complex and is the largest religious monument in the world, covering 402 acres!

Bayon

Bayon, aka “Temple of Faces” is a fun temple to explore. The Buddhist temple, sitting in the center of Angkor Thom has over 200 stone faces looking out over the land. Much of Bayon is still shrouded in mystery.

Botum Sakor National Park

Botum Sakor is Cambodia’s largest national park and is located near the Gulf of Thailand. Botum Sokor is covered with evergreen forests, grasslands, mangroves and swamp forests. This park contains a ton of diverse flora and fauna. Actually, most of the land in Botum Sokor National Park is still unstudied and undocumented! Take a trip here to possibly see 44 rare animal species such as Sunda pangolin, Bengal slow loris, Indochinese lutung, hog deer, dhole, fishing cat, Asian elephant, large-toothed ferret badger, hairy-nosed and the smooth-coated otter, sambar deer, large-spotted civet, pileated gibbon and the Indochinese tiger. There have also been some undocumented sightings of the Sun and Moon bear. Botum Sokor is also home to plenty of unique amphibians like the Mortensen’s frog and the spine-glanded mountain frog. Snakes like the king cobra and the Malay pit viper are very common to the park. So, tread carefully and maybe you’ll make it out alive with a newly discovered species!

Tonle Sap Biosphere Reserve and Floating Villages

Tonle Sap Biosphere Reserve and Floating Villages The Tonle Sap, also known as The Great Lake of Cambodia, is a special place to visit for various reasons. The Tonle Sap is the largest lake in Cambodia, with the waters from the Mekong and Tonle Sap rivers emptying out into this reserve. It is the only river in the world to reverse its flow. From November until June the lake flows into the Mekong. During the rainy season, June to October, the river reverses its flow and empties back into the lake. Villagers nearby Siem Reap built their small communities to float on the lake.

Originating from Battambang, the Phare Circus has also made its way to Siem Reap. This isn’t your typical circus show with clowns and animals. The performers have perfected dance, acrobatics, and storytelling to create and deliver amazing acts recounting Cambodia’s history.

Siem Reap has a few floating villages but the most untouched by tourists is Kampong Khleang. This village is more like a floating city, it has schools, pagodas, and even clinics.

Tourist souvenirs, clothes, tools, food, and much more await you in Old Market. This isn’t the largest market in Siem Reap. If you really want to be disoriented, visit Phsar Leu Market.

20 years ago, Siem Reap was just a tiny, dusty city in Cambodia. Thanks to Angkor attracting over 2 million visitors a year, Siem Reap is developing rapidly. The well-being of the people here is deeply linked to tourism with so many businesses operating mainly for foreigners. Day by day the city grows and who knows what Siem Reap will look like in another 20 years.
